Brief Overview of Ireland in the 1930sDuring the years 1932-39 the government of Ireland was led by Eamonn de Valera's Fianna Fáil. During this time De Velara would begin the process of dismantling the Treaty. For example, he downgraded the role of governor-general and abolished the oath of allegiance. In 1936 he introduced the External Relations Act, which removed all mention of the king in the Irish Free State's constitution. In 1937 de Valera drafted a new constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann, which declared that Ireland is a sovereign, independent, democratic state. In 1932 Fianna Fáil ordered the ending of all payments of land annuities to Britain. This led to an economic war with Britain which lasted until the Anglo-Irish Agreement,1938. Under this agreement Ireland made a one-off payment of 10 million pounds to Britain. The Treaty ports of Berehaven, Lough Swilly and Cobh were returned to Ireland.
