People in History – a named leader in the struggle for independence in Ireland 1900 to 1922
N.B. Focus on his involvement in the struggle for Irish independence – not too much background information. Michael Collins was born in West C____ in 1890. He emigrated to L_______ in 1906, where he worked in various financial institutions. He became a member of the IRB (Irish R____________ B____________) in 1909 in London. He returned to Ireland in 1916 to avoid c___________ (compulsory military service) to the British Army. He fought in the GPO (General P____ O______) in the 1916 E_______ Rising. He served as assistant to one of the organisers, Joseph Mary P________. There he fought alongside Padraig P______ and James C________. He was arrested in the aftermath of the Rising and i__________ (imprisoned without trial) in F_______ prison camp in W______. It was in Frongoch that he came to prominence in the republican movement. Collins was elected as a S_____ F_______ MP (Member of P_________) for South C______ in the 1918 General Election. He was appointed Minister of F______ in the First Dail. He raised a huge amount of money for the Dail loan. During the War of I_________ he was Director of I_________ of the IRA. He was also President of the IRB Supreme Council. Collins was a supporter of g________ w_______ tactics (hit and run). He had a special group of IRA men, called the S_____, whose job it was to assassinate anyone who was a threat to the independence movement. He also had an extensive s____ network, providing intelligence on British plans. On Bloody S______, the S_____ shot dead 12 British detectives. In retaliation the British B_____ and T_____ killed 14 people at a football match in C______ Park. At the height of the War of Independence the British had a reward of £10,000 for anyone with information that led to the arrest or death of Michael Collins. After the truce in the war, Collins was sent by De V______ as a chief negotiator to sign an Anglo Irish T______. He reluctantly signed the T_____ on the 6th of December, believing it to be the best deal available. After he signed it he was reported to have said “I have just signed my d______ w______.” He saw the Treaty as “a s________ s______” to full independence and defended it in the Dail debates. He became a key member in the Provisional Free State government. He ordered the shelling of the anti-Treaty IRA men who were occupying the F_____ C_____ in June 1922. This was the beginning of the C_____ W____. He went on a military visit to West Cork in August 1922 and was killed in an ambush at B_____ na B______.
